For many of us, at The Core and the world-at-large, our love for produce and specific FRESH items begins with a childhood memory. Kelly, The Visualizer, recently told you about her nostalgic connection to Blue Bell Homemade Ice Cream and I have a very similar emotional tie to my Dad’s favorite fruit.
Inspired by our recent celebration of Father’s Day, my FRESH memory starts with the sweet smell of fresh blackberries baking creeping into my bedroom on a summer morning. As a kid, I immediately leapt out of bed and rushed downstairs in my Disney pajamas – it must be my Dad’s Birthday! Every year, my mom would bake fresh blackberry crumble for my Dad on Father’s Day and his Birthday, both within a month of each other. He has always LOVED blackberries, and he has his own nostalgic ties to the little fruits stemming from his childhood in Florida, picking wild, fresh blackberries right off the vine.
Even though I never went blackberry picking myself, my Mom’s recipe still to this day evokes that sense of nostalgia, especially on summer mornings. When I see a clamshell of blackberries during the summer, little pieces of those memories resurface from the back of my mind and I can’t help but buy a few to reminisce with!
